Secretary of State announces new appointments to Low Pay Commission
Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling today announced the appointment of four new members of the independent Low Pay Commission, which advises the Government on the level of the National Minimum Wage. The appointments are for three years.
The new commissioners are John Hannett, Frances O'Grady, Susan Anderson and Neil Goulden. They replace Paul Gates, Ian Brinkley, John Cridland and Angela Risley.
Mr Darling thanked the four commissioners standing down after their three-year period ended and said:
"Those serving on the Commission play an important role in the modern British economy, getting the right rate of pay for millions of workers who need it most and for business.
"We are grateful to the hard work and commitment of those who have served and welcome the new members to the Commission who will take on that work in the years to come."
The latest recommendation on the National Minimum Wage from the Commission was accepted by the Secretary of State in March, and comes into effect in October.
More than a million workers will benefit from the latest rise in the National Minimum Wage from £5.35 to £5.52 an hour from October. For 18-21 year olds it increases from £4.45 to £4.60 and for 16-17 year olds from £3.30 to £3.40.
